After stronger-than-expected sales pushed the final June 2 Mega Millions jackpot amount to $262 million ($159 million cash), a lucky ticket holder in Illinois reaped the benefit by matching all six numbers drawn – the white balls 2, 9, 11, 22 and 23, plus the gold Mega Ball 12.
It is the fourth time the jackpot has been won this year. Another Illinois player took home $265 million on January 16, and New Yorkers claimed back-to-back jackpots on February 27 ($126 million) and March 24 ($58 million).
Also in the June 2 drawing, there were an amazing 14 Match 5 winners of $1 million each, with tickets sold in California, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York (2), North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia (3) and Washington.
During the runup to this jackpot win, since March 24 there have been a total of 33.6 million winning Mega Millions tickets sold at all prize levels, including 43 prizes of $1 million or more.
