Rhode Island’s first Mega Millions jackpot prize claimed

RELEASE DATE: 10/27/2017

Exactly two weeks after the Mega Millions drawing that resulted in the first jackpot winning ticket sold in Rhode Island, a father and son from Providence have claimed the prize.

The $42,000,000 jackpot for the October 13th drawing was split between these Rhode Island winners and a winning ticket sold in Michigan. The father and son had the option to take the $21,000,000 annuity prize or the lump sum cash option of $13,133,208.50.  The men opted for the cash option, so they each received $6,566,604.25, less Federal Withholdings of $1,641,651.06 and State Withholdings of $393,339.59 for a final amount of $4,531,613.60 each.

The winners plan to do some traveling, and then invest the remainder of their winnings.

Martin’s Petroleum, 481 Warren Ave., East Providence, sold the winning ticket to the son, who picked the winning numbers, 2, 7, 18, 26, 31, and Mega Ball 12.

The state of Rhode Island will also benefit from this big win, receiving an estimated lump sum tax payment of $786,679.
