As summer transitions into fall, a lucky Mega Millions ticket holder in Texas will have a September to remember after winning a $225 million jackpot ($157.0 million cash) on Tuesday night! One ticket matched all six numbers drawn on September 24 – the white balls 6, 14, 24, 42 and 46, plus the gold Mega Ball 9. The final jackpot amount reflects actual sales and varies slightly from the estimated value.
It is the sixth Mega Millions jackpot won to date in 2019. The year began with a $437 million prize won New York on January 1, followed by $273 million in New Jersey on March 1 and $50 million in Missouri on March 12. The biggest jackpot of the year, $522 million, was won in California on June 7, and New Hampshire got its very first Mega Millions jackpot winner with a $168 million prize on July 23.
In addition to the jackpot-winning ticket, there were 770,762 other winning tickets Tuesday night at all prize levels. One ticket, sold in Florida, matched the five white balls to win the game’s second prize. Because that ticket included the optional Megaplier, which was 4X for the September 24 drawing, that ticket is worth $4 million. For matching four white balls plus the Mega Ball, 25 tickets won $10,000 each in Tuesday’s drawing; seven of those are actually worth $40,000 each because they also included the optional Megaplier.
During this jackpot run, there were almost 8.8 million winning tickets sold, including the jackpot and 12 other tickets with prize values of $1 million or more.
The next drawing on Friday, September 27, resets to its starting value of $40 million ($27.9 million cash).
