As everyone looks forward to a brand new year, Mega Millions offers added excitement as the calendar turns! An estimated $401 million ($305.4 million cash) jackpot will be offered on Friday, January 1, after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn on Tuesday night – the white balls 1, 31, 35, 48 and 62, plus the gold Mega Ball 19. If won at that level, it would be the twelfth largest prize in Mega Millions history!
And if there’s a sense of déjà vu developing, it’s understandable – exactly two years ago, a similarly-large Mega Millions jackpot of $437 million was won on New Year’s Day in 2019.
There were plenty of winners Tuesday night even as the jackpot rolls. Twenty tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to win $10,000; three of those are actually worth $30,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier, a $1 extra purchase available in most states. Tuesday night’s Megaplier was 3X. In total, there were 1,005,126 winning tickets at all prize levels in the December 29 drawing.
Since the jackpot was last won in Wisconsin on September 15, there have been more than 15.9 million winning tickets sold at all prize levels, including 22 worth $1 million or more.
The Mega Millions jackpot was won five times in 2020, with two states getting their first-ever jackpot win in the game: Arizona, which took the largest prize of the year at $414 million on June 9, and Wisconsin, where a lucky winner won $120 million on September 15. Two 2020 jackpots were won in New Jersey: $202 million on February 11 and $123 million on July 24. And on July 31, a California winner took home a $22 million prize.
