Jackpot Approaches $400 Million!

RELEASE DATE: 1/22/2022

Historically January is a big month for big Mega Millions® jackpots, and this year the trend is continuing! After no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Friday night – the white balls 38, 45, 46, 55 and 67, plus the gold Mega Ball 18 – next Tuesday’s estimated jackpot is $396 million ($273.6 million cash). If won at that level, it would be the fifteenth largest jackpot in the 20-year history of the game!

It was just a year ago when a $1.05 billion jackpot was won by a four-player lottery club in Michigan on January 22, 2021, and big January jackpots were also won in 2018 ($451 million in Florida) and 2019 ($437 million in New York). In 2011, a $380 million jackpot was split by winners in the Pacific Northwest, with winning tickets in Idaho and Washington. See the complete history of Mega Millions jackpots.

Since the jackpot was last won in Arizona on October 22, there have been more than 14 million winning tickets at all prize levels, including 33 worth $1 million or more. Those big second-tier prizes have been won in 16 different states across the country: California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.

While the jackpot rolls, there were plenty of winners in the January 21 drawing – a total of 855,995 winning tickets at all prize levels. One ticket, sold in Georgia, matched the five white balls to win the game’s $1 million second prize. Twenty-three tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to win the game’s third prize. Six of those are worth $20,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier (a $1 extra purchase available in most states), which was 2X Friday night. The other 17 third-prize tickets win $10,000 each.
