Yet Another Jackpot Win in January!

RELEASE DATE: 1/25/2023
UPDATED

For the first time in Mega Millions® history, the jackpot has been won for a third time in the month of January! It’s a wonderful winning way to start 2023 for the game’s players. A Massachusetts ticket-holder will take home the $33 million prize ($17.4 million cash) after matching all six numbers drawn Tuesday night – the white balls 33, 41, 47, 50 and 62, plus the gold Mega Ball 20. As always, the final jackpot values are based on actual sales; the jackpot for January 24 was a little higher than the initial estimate.

Massachusetts was one of the original founders of the game when it first launched as The Big Game in 1996. Since it became Mega Millions in 2002, the state has had three previous jackpot winners: $294 million on July 2, 2004; $32 million on August 19, 2011; and $61 million (shared with a California winner) on October 16, 2012.

Although three jackpot wins in any single month wasn’t all that unusual in the early years of Mega Millions, this is the first time any month has had more than two jackpot wins since the matrix changed at the end of October 2017.

There were other big winners in the January 24 drawing. Two tickets matched all five white balls to win the game’s $1 million second-tier prize, one each in Florida and New Jersey. For matching four white balls plus the Mega Ball, 10 tickets have a third-tier win. One of those is worth $40,000 because it included the optional Megaplier (available in most states with an extra $1 purchase), which was 4X on Tuesday night. The other nine win the standard $10,000 prize.

In total, for the two drawings in this cycle, there were 902,424 winning tickets across the country at all prize levels, including the jackpot-winning ticket.

The jackpot for the next drawing on Friday, January 27, again resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($10.5 million cash).
