RELEASE DATE: 3/19/2024
Growing enthusiasm for a top prize that is nearing $1 billion has led to an increase in the estimated jackpot for tonight’s Mega Millions® drawing. Now estimated at a whopping $893 million ($421.4 million cash), only five previous jackpots in the game’s history have been larger. All five of them eventually surpassed $1 billion, including the current game record of $1.602 billion set last August 8 when won in Florida.
The jackpot has been rolling since it was last won with two tickets in California on December 8. We remind players to check their tickets – there are eight prize tiers in addition to the jackpot. In the March 15 drawing alone, there were a total of 1,587,100 winning tickets at all non-jackpot prize levels. And in the 28 drawings during this jackpot run, there have been almost 21.5 million winning Mega Millions tickets even as the jackpot has remained elusive.
Tuesday night’s drawing will be conducted as usual at the WSB-TV studio in Atlanta, Georgia, at 11 p.m. Eastern time. Soon afterwards, the draw video will be available through the Mega Millions website.
Tickets for the $2 game are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In most jurisdictions, players can add the Megaplier for an additional $1 to multiply their non-jackpot prizes. Half of the proceeds from the sale of each Mega Millions ticket remains in the state where the ticket was sold, where the money supports designated good causes and retailer commissions.
