California Man Claims $30.5 Million MEGA Millions Jackpot Prize

RELEASE DATE: 11/6/2012

SACRAMENTO – The latest MEGA Millions jackpot winner recently came forward to claim his prize. Alex Cordova wasn’t the only lucky one on the night of October 10, 2012 – he actually split the $61 million MEGA Millions jackpot with another player in Massachusetts – but he still cashed in, winning a $30.5 million prize. He chose the cash option, which is worth an estimated $23 million.

Cordova works at Fresno State University as an Events and Facilities Supervisor and has worked there for nearly 15 years. He explained how others have reacted to his win: “Friends, family and co-workers have been supportive and have celebrated my blessing. All have told me that it couldn’t have happened to a better person. This is an exciting time for me and my family and I want to take this opportunity to express my deep thanks to God, my parents and family, Fresno State Athletics coaches and staff that I have worked with, the CSU Fresno Community, and Memorial High School grounds crew and staff.”

When asked how he is handling his big win, he said, “My work ethic is enduring with a humble attitude. A lot of people ask me how such a windfall might change me and I tell them that I have lived by these virtues and will continue to do so – accept other peoples’ feelings, treat others like you would want to be treated and always stay real.”

Cordova’s jackpot ticket was sold at the 7-Eleven located at 2389 East Shaw Avenue in Fresno and the lucky retailer will receive a bonus of $152,500. The ticket successfully matched the numbers 37, 46, 52, 13, 40 and the Mega number of 29.

In order to claim a MEGA Millions prize, players must present to the Lottery the actual winning ticket. As a multistate game, MEGA Millions is played in California and 43 other jurisdictions (41 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Players pick five numbers from 1 to 56 plus a Mega number from 1 to 46. Draw times are Tuesdays and Fridays at 8:00 p.m. PST. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased from any of the more than 21,000 California Lottery retailers. Please visit the California Lottery’s MEGA Millions site for more information.

As jackpots rise, the California Lottery would like to remind players that gambling should be fun. Borrowing money to play, spending above a person’s budget or using money intended for other purposes can ultimately lead to significant problems for players and their families. If a player recognizes that they have a gambling problem or if they know someone who may have a problem, the Lottery recommends calling the Problem Gambling Help Line at 1-800-GAMBLER.

And remember, checking the daily draw results is easier than ever. All past and current Lottery draw results can be obtained for FREE by dialing 1-800-LOTTERY and selecting option 2, or via our website at www.calottery.com.

The mission of the California Lottery is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. More than 94 cents of every dollar spent by our players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retail compensation. The California Lottery urges its customers to play responsibly and within their budgets. If you feel you have a gambling problem, or know someone who does, you can get help at 1-800-GAMBLER.
