RELEASE DATE: 12/31/2014
As a new year begins, the Mega Millions jackpot continues to rise, with an estimated $188 million ($119 million cash option) available in the first drawing of 2015 on January 2. No ticket matched all six numbers drawn on December 30 – the white balls 3, 7, 44, 63 and 67, plus the Mega Ball of 12. Two tickets matched the first five numbers to win $1 million, one each in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
The jackpot has been rolling since it was last won for $326 million in New York on November 4, the most ever won on a single Mega Millions ticket. The largest jackpot of 2014 was a $414 million prize split between winners in Florida and Maryland on March 18 – it was the third-highest jackpot in Mega Millions history. Many of the game’s other big jackpots have also been shared by multiple winners.
Early January drawings have been lucky for Mega Millions jackpots. Four times there has been a jackpot winner in the first drawing of a new year, most recently just one year ago, when a $61 million prize was won on January 3, 2014. The fifth largest jackpot in Mega Millions history, $380 million, was won on January 4, 2011. Other jackpot wins in the first drawing of a new year were $47 million on January 2, 2009, and $33 million on January 1, 2008.
