RELEASE DATE: 1/7/2015
For only the ninth time in the past five years, the Mega Millions jackpot has surged well past the $200 million mark, with an estimated $221 million prize ($144 million cash option) on tap for the next drawing on Friday, January 9. No ticket matched all six numbers drawn on January 6 – the white balls 12, 20, 27, 38 and 75, plus the Mega Ball of 4. One ticket, sold in Minnesota, matched the first five numbers to win $1 million.
The jackpot has been rolling since it was last won for $326 million in New York on November 4, the eighth largest Mega Millions jackpot in history and the most ever won on a single ticket. All of the larger jackpots have been shared among multiple winning tickets.
Since Mega Millions began in 2002, there have been a total of 11 jackpots won during the month of January, including the fifth largest jackpot ever ($380 million), split between two winning tickets on January 4, 2011. The jackpot has been won at least once in January every year since 2005.
